Update and consultation

The Islington Compact was originally launched in 2003, but was not widely known. The process of revising it began in the early part of 2008 with the aim of improving and updating the agreement and broadening the range of statutory sector partners.

It was felt that a revision was needed to increase its accessibility, strengthen partnership working, and to ensure the continued relevance of the Compact in a changing legislative and policy environment.

The Change Up and Compact Consortium, which represents both the third sector and the statutory sector, led on the revision supported by Voluntary Action Islington and Islington Council.

The official review was launched during June 2008 and focussed on the Compact’s role in promoting equality and developments in commissioning. The launch event attracted 100 people from the third and statutory sectors.

Work began on the rewrite during the summer of 2008 – with major changes to the style and content as well as new sections such as community involvement and information sharing. A 3 month consultation began in January 2009 and ended in April with over 50 organisations actively giving feedback on the draft, and offering ideas regarding implementation.

The consultation raised awareness of both the existence and the relevance of the Islington Compact, and gave some a clearer idea about the role, activities and structure of the local third sector.

Thank you to all those who took part in the scoping and consultation. The comments and suggestions of those that took part were highly influential. A consultation response document is available here.
