Gambling and Mental Health Service Users workshop

April 26 @ 10:00 - 12:30

This VAI workshop will aim to increase awareness of gambling dependency issues and help those attending walk away with practical knowledge. It will cover topics such as why gambling becomes a problem, red flags, safeguards and treatment pathways.

We will also provide you with a user-friendly gambling screening tool to help you to identify gambling problems amongst your client group. There is increasing evidence that gambling is proving problematic for mental health service users and we look forward to providing you with support on this issue.

Gambling is one of the most popular leisure activities in the UK today, around 70% of the UK population will place a bet this year. Deregulation and new technology has driven the accessibility and opportunity to gamble, and coupled with relentless marketing of gambling services, there has been rapid growth in the sector. However, for an increasing number of people, gambling can become addictive and like drugs/alcohol can trigger a host of problematic issues. This is particularly true for mental health service users who are more at risk than the general population.

The workshop will be delivered by Betknowmore UK, a social enterprise offering gambling support and education services from a support hub in Islington. Betknowmore works with other organisations across both voluntary and commercial sectors and their ACT programme is the first dedicated outreach service for gambling in the UK.
