In December 2009 Islington Voluntary Action Council (IVAC) became Voluntary Action Islington. In December 2009 we moved to new premises. Our new address is 200 Pentonville Road, London N1 9JP. These changes represent a significant step forward for the organisation, following our merger with the Islington Volunteer Centre in April 2009. Our new name and visual identity tells people what we are about – promoting and supporting action by individuals, groups and organisations in Islington. We are not a Council and the way we work is not similar to a Council. It is confusing to have the word in our name. The move to new premises has resulted in new ways of working for the organisation. We are much more visible, with a shop front, and premises that are accessible to people in the borough. The new premises are much larger, with meeting rooms and desk spaces that can be used by other organisations and volunteers too. Our telephone numbers and email addresses have changed. A new webiste is currently being developed and will go live later this year. The new web site address, which is already operational, is www.vai.org.uk Whilst the new site is being developed we hope to minimise disruption but apologise in advance for any short term inconvenience or inaccuracies that these changes might cause. In the long term they should result in us becoming a stronger organisation that is better placed to provide more effective support to individuals and groups that want to make a positive difference to the local community in Islington. IVAC and Islington Volunteer Centre MergerIVAC and IVC have merged into one organisation. We have merged to become stronger and to enable greater effectiveness and support for the work we do. The merger took effect on 1st April 2009. At first the new organisation will be called IVAC but will change to Voluntary Action Islington shortly. IVAC and IVC decided that it would be in the best interests of both organisations and the people we serve to join together. We will continue the work that we already do in promoting the voluntary sector in Islington and helping people into volunteering. IVAC’s mission is to promote a thriving, effective and influential third sector that is working to improve the quality of life and the life chances of people in Islington. IVC’s work complements this. IVC provides a service that matches members of the public with volunteering opportunities in a wide variety of organisations including the public, voluntary and community sectors. IVC helps members of under-represented groups in this and provides support to organisations that take volunteers. The key projects are: Diversity – to give members of BME groups including refugees and asylum seekers the opportunity and support to volunteer Disability – to dismantle barriers to volunteering for disabled people Metamorphoses – to support ex-offenders and people with a history of substance misuse into volunteering Best Practice – to help organisations support and develop volunteers to their full potential IVC moved to IVAC’s offices on 1st April. For the address and contact details please see the Home page. The form of the merger is that the merged organisation will adopt the IVAC charity and company registrations. In the short term the new organisation will be called IVAC but this will change to Voluntary Action Islington in the near future. Mike Sherriff will be the Chief Executive of the new organisation.
