New Chair for Voluntary Action Islington

04/11/2014

At its AGM this evening, attended by over 100 Islington volunteers and representatives of community organisations, Voluntary Action Islington announced a new chair.

Andy Murphy is to step down after 5 years in the role. The new Chair will be former Islington Councillor and Mayor, Phil Kelly.

Phil got to know many local volunteers and community organisations during his time as Mayor and is already a trustee of Help on Your Doorstep, the local charity that knocks on doors and puts people in touch with services that can help them.

Phil said “The voluntary sector in Islington has shaped the community we live in and the civic life of our borough and continues to do so. When I served as mayor I said on many occasions that it appeared to me that many people in Islington seem to get up in the mornings and ask themselves: What can I do to help someone else today?”

Mike Sherriff, Chief Executive of Voluntary Action Islington said:

“Andy has had a huge positive impact on the work of our organisation and we are very grateful for all he has done for the voluntary sector in the borough. There are few people in Islington who know the borough and the Council as well as Phil does and I look forward to working with him over the coming year.”
